When The Photographer Becomes The Wardrobe Stylist

Let’s start with what inspired me to incorporate wardrobe styling into my photography services. About 6 months ago, I was sad and depressed because I just moved to a new city. I didn’t know of any dope locations or scenery, so I couldn’t conceptualize a photoshoot in my head. I also didn’t have a team to help me put together photoshoot ideas. After weeks of feeling stuck in the sunken place, and said to myself, outloud, “Why do I need help from others for something I can do myself?” I then challenged myself to be as much of my own team as I could, with the resources that I had. I took a model to a thrift store, I picked out her outfit and we did a photoshoot right in front of the store. It was a big success!!

Here’s How Some Of The Portraits Turned Out

Being A Wardrobe Stylist

Now after living in Florida for a few months and still no team, I decided to challenge myself again. This time I had the location in mind before hand and could envision how I wanted everything to look. Since the location was an old tree, I knew I wanted to go with an earth tone look and a Vogue Magazine feel. Again, I took the model to a thrift store and found the colors and look that I was going for.

How Can One Be A Wardrobe Stylist?

I honestly don’t know how I was able to pull off such a task. I’m someone who has all solid color shoes and shirts because I’m not into all that coordinating and tone matching stuff. I actually HATE shopping. The best advice I can give you is, start with your imagination. That’s all I did. I literally saw a dark skin woman in earth tone colors (browns, greens and orange to be exact) posing with a chair under the tree. The only thing I didn’t see in my vision was the umbrella, that was added as we shopped, it matched the pants.

As a Portrait Photographer, putting out creative and attention grabbing images, can really set you apart from the rest of the professional photographers. These portraits turned out to be some of my best bodies of work to date.

You can catch all of the behind the scenes and footage of the actual shoot in my YouTube video! Enjoy!

Being a portrait photographer means you have to step outside your comfort zone and do things you’ve never done before. I’m a photographer, who would have thought I could be a wardrobe stylist also?
